Orientating the Slides to work on the Nikon Super CoolScan 5000
- Turn all the slides so that they are orientated the same way, paying attention to three things: make sure the the emulsion side faces the same way, the landscape pictures should all be upside down and the portrait pictures sideways, and keep the slides in the order they should be scanned.
- Set the slides by the machine you will be using. Place a slide into the machine with the emulsion facing downward and the top of the landscape image pointing to the left. (see left image)
- If you are using the Nikon SF-210, place the group of slides in the adapter so that the emulsion faces outwards (to the right) and that the top of the landscape image is pointing down. (see below image)
- NOTE: If you are scanning slides that were duplicated from an original, the emulsion must face the other way. Additionally, there are some companies (i.e. Seattle Film Works and Gift shops) that will produce slides where the emulsion will face the opposite ways. In most cases, the mount will state "This side towards screen". The "side towards screen" should always be placed as if it had emulsion according to steps 1-3)
